Fishing in the Greater Antonito Area
The greater Antonito area is an excellent choice for fishing. No matter which river or reservoir you choose, no matter what time of year you're on the water, you will have something biting your line. Fish for Kokanee Salmon, Common Carp, Channel Catfish, Yellow Perch, Walleye, Northern Pike, and Trout: Rainbow, Brown, Brook, Native Cutthroat, Splake.
The Conejos and the Rio Grande Rivers have designated Gold Medal Waters! Cast your line into the Rio Grande, teeming with brook, cutthroat, rainbow and brown trout. The Conejos River is also an acclaimed gold medal trout fishing river; flowing from the San Juan Wilderness in southern Colorado, the Conejos provides fly-fishing anglers excellent rainbow, brook and brown trout fishing. Whether you settle in by a River or find a crystal clear lake, you're going to experience Colorado's best fishing.
Please note: The water level rises and falls often in this area so boating may not be allowed depending on water levels; check water levels before you hitch up the boat.
Antonito Area Public River Fishing
Conejos River - Fish from the town of Platoro downstream to the confluence with the South Fork of the Conejos River. You can only fish with artificial flies and lures. You can only bag two Trout that are minimum 16 inches in length. Access is along County Road 250 and along the east side of the Platoro Reservoir.
Rio Grande River - This section of the river does not have Gold Medal fishing but there are other sections that do; you might be able to snag a Gold Medal fish since this is downstream from that area. There are various access points along Highway 160 between Monte Vista and Alamosa and also between Alamosa and the New Mexico border.

Antonito Area Public Reservoir/Lake Fishing
La Jara Reservoir - Feeds the La Jara Creek, which dumps into the Rio Grande River. Boat ramp allows for motorized boats. Access the Reservoir from a dirt road along the east side from the intersection of County Roads 240 and 252.
Mountain Home Reservoir - Boat ramp allows for motorized boats. Located south of Fort Garland; access to the Reservoir is from a dirt road south of Highway 159.
Platoro Reservoir - Motorized boats allowed. The Conejos River flows from the North side of the Reservoir. Located South of Stunner Pass along County Road 250.
San Luis Lake - Located within the San Luis State Park. Boat ramp allows for motorized boats. Underwater spear fishing is prohibited within 100 feet of a marina, boat ramp, swim beach, and dam. Access to the park and lake is north of Road 6 N east of Mosca.
Sanchez Reservoir - Boat ramp allows for motorized boats. One of the only places in the area to catch fish other than Trout. Located southeast of San Luis, access the Reservoir from Road 21.
Smith Reservoir - Boat ramp allows for motorized boats. Located between Blanca and Fort Garland, access the Reservoir from a dirt road on the south side of Highway 160.
