Discover Lake City's only underground gift shop, museum & mine tour. Our guided tour takes you back 100 years to experience how hard rock miners lived their everyday lives. The Gift shop and museum have a great selection of gifts and the areas largest rock collection to browse. *NEW* - Try your luck at gold panning! The Hardtack Mine is owned and operated by George and Beth Hurd both being home grown Lake Citians. A one time hard rock miner, George, has a wealth of mining and mineral expertise. His knowledge of the local mining history is unmatched and you can tell it on this tour. Come see how the miners really lived and experience the bygone age of Lake City mining. Journey deep inside a real mine tunnel and experience Lake City days gone by. Those taking the 40 minute tour are treated to a walk in a 100 year old mine where there are unique lighted displays depicting how workers dug and blasted through rock using only hand tools and dynamite. Be aware that the temperature underground is a constant 45¡ (7¡C), so take a jacket even on the hottest summer day. Hours: Memorial Day through Labor Day. Open Tuesday - Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Closed Sunday and Mondays. Handicap accessible and state inspected. Group tours and Schools Outings available year around by appointment. Rd 20, County Rd 30, Engineer & Cinnamon Pass. Please call for reservations 970-275-0247. The Hardtack Mine is chocked full of all kinds of goods and hardware, including gems and minerals plus ore samples from the surrounding area. T-shirts, hats, rocks, games and local art as well as the occasional antique or two adorn our shop. Once in awhile a tommyknocker and his friends may even stop by for a visit with the resident miners to chat about days gone by.
