Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water with 41,972 Acres, offers the largest Kokanee Salmon Fishery in the United States! Look to catch Kokanee during mid-summer or fall spawning. Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat and Lake trout (Mackinaw) also thrive here. A new "trophy trout" is produced almost yearly at Blue Mesa Reservoir. The most recent, set in 2003, is a Mackinaw at 46 pounds and nearly four feet long!

Blue Mesa Fishing

Fishing continues throughout winter as cold water brings fish closer to the surface. Ice fishing yields all variety of species, although the largest fish generally come out in spring after the ice melts. Fishing is also highly popular in areas surrounding Blue Mesa Reservoir as it is central to Curecanti National Recreation Area. The many tributaries yield exciting catch with some seclusion if you're looking for more adventure.

Boat ramps are available from State Highway 149 on the southeast, US 50 near Stevens Creek Tributary to the northeast, and at the Soap Creek Arm to the northwest. There are two marinas, Lake Fork at the west end near the junction of US 50 and State Highway 92 and Elk Creek is accessible from US 50 near the East Elk Creek tributary. Gunnison resides nine miles east of Blue Mesa Reservoir and Cimarron is nearby to the west. Here you can find all necessary accommodations for your Blue Mesa Reservoir fishing excursion.
