Steamboat Springs Area Map
The Steamboat Springs area, located in Northwestern Colorado, is bounding with activities and history. Surrounded by Routt National Forest and four State Parks, there is never a dull moment. Steamboat Springs received its name because French Trappers thought they heard the chugging of a steamboat while riding through the city. What they actually heard was the rumbling of the hot springs in the earth below.
Steamboat Springs is known for its winter activities, namely skiing, and the town's nickname is "Ski Town USA." Equally as exciting during the winter is snowmobiling, and there are three significant trail systems here. To the south, near Rabbit Ears Pass (9,426'), there are trails on either side of US Highway 40. Continuing south towards Kremmling and west to Gore pass trails disperse to the north of Colorado Highway 134. To the North of Steamboat Springs, the third trail system begins with Hahns Peak as a central point and the trails extend in all directions for 146 miles. This could take some time!
Summer is less extreme but fun nonetheless. With four State Parks, Steamboat Lake, Pearl Lake, Yampa River, and Stagecoach Reservoir, there is plenty of activity. Fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding are popular past-times but the list doesn't end there. Steamboat is well known, during summer, for its festivals. From hot air balloons to music, there is never a dull moment.
Let's not forget that Steamboat Springs also has natural hot springs. Remember the towns' namesake comes from this fact. Also nearby Steamboat, connecting Yampa to Meeker, is the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway. This is some of Colorado's most prestigious scenery.
