Gunnison - Southwest Colorado
Experience Gunnison, Blue Mesa Lake, Ohio City, Parlin, Pitkin, Sargents, Sapinero, Taylor Park, and Waunita Hot Springs, Colorado
Named for a topographer who was mapping a railroad route to the Pacific in 1853, Gunnison is surrounded by over 1.7 million acres of public land. The Gunnison River Territory stretches from one spectacular nature scape to another with plunging canyon walls, emerald lakes, imposing peaks and wildflower meadows. Ute Indians, miners, ranchers and the railroads all contributed to the western character of this area.
Today, Gunnison prides itself on having some of the best outdoor recreation in the state. Blue Mesa Reservoir in the Curecanti National Recreation Area, 9 miles west, is the largest man-made lake in Colorado with 96 miles of shoreline - an angler's paradise. Gunnison National Forest has more than 750 miles of teeming trout streams and reservoirs. Nearby, the Aberdeen Quarry was in operation from 1889 to 1892 and supplied the stone for Denver's capitol. The Alpine Tunnel is 30 miles east of Gunnison and northeast of Ohio City and Sargents. The tunnel is now abandoned and only accessible by off-road vehicle, bore through the Continental Divide at 11,523', making it the highest railroad station in the country. Drive along the West Elk Scenic Byway through Almont, 30 miles north to Crested Butte.
The Gunny Play Park is located just outside of Gunnison on the Gunnison River along Hwy 50. It has 3 surf features and a series of rock formations that offer a variety of experiences at different levels creating a paddle playground for kayakers. This park hosts the annual Gunnison River Festival in June.
