The Wild Horse Refuge is on 23,000 acres, the largest mustang sanctuary in the United States. It is a safe haven for mustangs to play and live safely on the pristine grasslands of Moffat County in northwest Colorado. Wild horses are an iconic symbol of the American West. They are known for their beauty, spirit, and independence.
The American Mustangs are descendants of the warhorses' colonial Spaniards brought to the Americas. Over time, they bred with other European breeds to become the modern free-roaming mustangs. Wild horses refuse to be trained for riding.
Our refuge provides a unique opportunity for them to return to range-land with natural landscapes of rocks, trees, hills, buttes, bluffs, and water. Our wild horses are cared for by an onsite veterinary clinic.
The Wild Horse Refuge is a sanctuary dedicated to saving Colorado-born wild horses that were displaced from their native homeland. These horses are adopted or purchased, brought to the refuge, and allowed their freedom and wild spirit.
