The town of Crested Butte, a registered National Historic District and turn-of-the-century Victorian mining town, got its start during the mining days of the 1800s. Today, Crested Butte is known as a 4-season resort town. Elk Avenue boasts an assortment of shopping: from boutiques to outfitters and high fashion western home decor to whimsical children's stores and galleries featuring original paintings and photography from many local artisans. Known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte basks in gentle mountain warmth with the perfect amount of sunshine and rain, an inspiration for nature lovers.
Spend a day at the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame or the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum. Annual events include: Fat Tire Bike Week, the oldest bike festival in the world; the US Extreme Skiing and Snowboard Championships; the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, a week-long festival in July.
The town is near mountain bike trails that take you over scenic passes and four-wheel drive roads to old ghost towns. Try fly-fishing in East River, Brush Creek, and Slate River. Lake Irwin is a leisurely fishing experience with rainbow and brook trout; the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is designated as Wild Trout Waters. Bring your golf clubs and play a round on the championship course. Explore the mountains around Crested Butte on foot, snowshoes, skis, horseback, mountain bike, or with a four-wheel drive vehicle, ATV, and snowmobile (55 miles of groomed trails).
For those interested in the performing arts and theatre, the Crested Butte Mountain Theatre and the Crested Butte Center for the Arts feature ongoing plays both original and renown; ballet, musicians from around the world, and vocalists that hit the high notes at an altitude of 8,885 feet!
