Burlington, Colorado was established for the coming of the Chicago, Rocky Island, and Pacific Railroads in 1888. Years later, it was used as a rest stop for travelers going to and from Denver. Today, it is a great destination for historical sights and the perfect place to spend the day heading to or from the mountains on Colorado's Eastern Plains.
Burlington is home to the Kit Carson County Carousel, a Nationally designated Historic Site in 1978 and a Nationally designated Historic Landmark in 1987. The Carousel, built in 1905, is a hand carved wooden merry-go-round. With the intricate detail of each animal and oil paintings that portray various subjects of the time, this ride is well worth the 25-cent admission. The Carousel is open all summer through Labor Day.
The Kit Carson County Fair is the people's fair! Located right in Burlington at the fairgrounds, you can see livestock shows, arts, crafts, and rodeos all for your enjoyment. Take in the sights and sounds of the fair at the Annual Kit Carson County Fairgrounds held in late July.
Make sure you visit the Old Town Museum, a collection of 1900 style buildings, full of antiques and exhibits. Buy a tour ticket and enjoy the bonus of an evening melodrama performed in a gigantic red barn.
Top off your day with a malt or sundae at the old fashioned soda fountain. Delight in the peaceful feeling of this small, historic, secluded town, and leave the stress of the big cities behind you.
Stratton, Colorado is has excellent outdoor activities. Play a round of golf at the Stratton Golf Course, a top attraction in the area. It also has expansive prairie lands home to deer, antelope, pheasant, and sand hill cranes. Nearby is the Bonny State Wildlife Area, formerly a Colorado State Park.

Burlington is 13 miles west of the Kansas border and 166 miles east of Denver, Colorado. Passing through Stratton, Seibert is 35 miles west of Burlington along Interstate-70 (I-70). Cheyenne Wells and Kit Carson are south of Burlington along Highway 287.
