Activities & Tourist Attractions in Colorado

The word attraction can mean many different things. In association with Physics, it is defined as the force that acts between oppositely charged bodies, drawing them together. It can be a characteristic or quality of a person that entices and allures another. It can be a person or thing that entertains a crowd. The Colorado Vacation Directory approached the question thinking about what attracts families to vacation in Colorado.

A tourist attraction is a place or event specifically designed to create an experience. This can be anything from haunted cemeteries, gondola rides, UFO sites, castles or any of those listed below. These places typically have some sort of a cultural value, historical significance, or offer amusement. All of our attractions are family friendly whether you have young children or older kids.

Some of these businesses may also be an accommodation with an attraction on site or nearby. If the attraction is a part of an accommodation, they are open to the general public, not just their guests, and will usually have a separate cost after lodging.

Theme Parks are great for family vacations especially larger groups and family reunions. These parks will have a specific theme with rides and/or activities associated with them. North Pole Home of Santa's Workshop near Colorado Springs and Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs are great fun for kids of all ages.

Historic Sites are locations that have pieces of history preserved within the land. They can be buildings, landscapes, districts or sites having a special significance. These places are usually a destination for vacationers; people plan their vacation to certain areas of Colorado because they want to visit a historic site. Rock Ledge Ranch is a unique place with daily activities and demonstrations of Colorado history. Lake City and Breckenridge have great historic districts; culture and history are heavily focused on in these areas.

Mines are great tourist attractions because they give vacationers a fun, hands-on, educational activity. Colorado mines can be current working mines or ones that are now preserved to keep their look specifically for tours. Some of the mines are very hands on and show you how to Pan for Gold. The Denver Mountain Area and the Leadville & Twin Lakes Area are known for their mines.

Museums are a wonderful way for the family to learn about Colorado's history. Colorado is sprinkled with local town museums that have a specific theme, whereas the larger museums in the metro areas can offer a broader look at the region and world. The Cliff Dwellings Museum in Manitou Springs and the Jack Dempsey Museum near Antonito are great "small-town" museums.

Seasonal Attractions: county fairs, summer concerts, speedways, airshows, and rodeos are all considered seasonal attractions as they are only open certain months out of the year. All of the seasonal attractions listed are family friendly.

Sightseeing Tours are considered family and group friendly. Travel by bike, bus, Jeep, ATV, Hot-Air Balloon, walk, Zipline, or Raft! See Colorado in a way you've never seen it before.

Train Rides help vacationers explore the Colorado wilderness and experience how Colorado's minerals, livestock, and people traveled before our highway system was created. Travel through tunnels and traverse the mountainside while learning about Colorado history. All train rides are family friendly. Few people know there are Train Rides scattered all over Colorado but we know where they are.

Vacation Destinations are located in interesting places that offer a variety of attractions, events, and accommodations (motels, cabins, RV parks, bed and breakfast inns, hotels), along with restaurants, museums, and outdoor adventures. Sometimes the destination is a Colorado town, a large vacation resort, a full-service campground, a dude ranch or a working cattle ranch. These tourism towns and businesses allow you and your family to get away from your daily lives, reconnect with each other, and create memories that will be remembered and re-created many times over.
