In beautiful Northwestern Colorado, owned and operated by Gene Scritchfield who is a licensed guide and outfitter in Meeker, Colorado.

Sable Mountain Outfitters offers Guided or Unguided Horse Rentals, Guided Big Game Hunts or Drop Camps, High Country Fishing Camp at Marvine Lake, Wilderness Pack Trips and Scenic Trail Rides in the White River National Forest and Flat Tops Wilderness.

Gene Scritchfield is a lifelong resident of Meeker, Colorado. His childhood was spent on horseback in what Gene calls his "backyard", the back country of the White River National Forest and Flat Tops Wilderness guiding and outfitting with his grandparents.

Now Gene is living out his dream and is privileged to be outfitting in one of the most beautiful areas in the United States. If you love the outdoors and you love the mountains, Gene and his horses are ready to take you there.

High Country Fishing at Marvine Lake:

Full service camp inside the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. We supply everything except your own fishing gear. We take you on a two hour horseback to the camp. We cook your meals. Sleep in tents. The scenery is, "The most beautiful place in the world," says Gene. Great lake and stream fishing or just relax. This is a trip you will long remember!

Trail Rides

Horseback riding is the best way to experience the majestic Rocky Mountains. The spectacular White River National Forest and Flat Tops Wilderness areas are accessed by numerous trailheads making each trail ride unique. If you're quiet, you may have the opportunity to see wildlife, such as mule deer, elk, coyotes or maybe even a bear.

Fall trail rides are a favorite. The mountain air is crisp and cool and the Aspen trees provide stunning views with their brilliant shades of golden yellow, orange and red interlaced in the evergreens.

Experienced riders may chose to explore the high mountain trails unguided or we will provide an experienced guide to accompany you to provide personal attention, instruction, and knowledge of the area to ensure that you enjoy your back country adventure.

Our dependable, sure-footed, mountain horses are individually trained for your riding pleasure so you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking views from the saddle. Whether you prefer a gentle, kid-safe mount or a spirited horse for the experienced rider, we do our best to ensure that horse and rider are compatible for a safe and enjoyable ride.

Wagon Rides

Orville & Wilber and Sonny & Cher have become a familiar site in our local area for holidays and special events. They are not the Wright brothers from history or the famous Sonny and Cher, but these four Belgians have made a big imprint of their own.

These two teams have ferried carolers at Christmas, carriaged special family parties and weddings, chauffeured deluxe dinner rides in the heart of the White River Valley, wowed the crowds in Meeker's Range Call Rodeo parade and Rangely's Septemberfest parade and have provided horse-drawn shuttle service during the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trails.

Make a big impression at your next special event. We are available on an hourly basis with our team and wagon for your wedding, family reunion, special birthday celebration or snuggle up with family and friends under warm blankets to the sound of sleigh bells and the rhythm of horses' hooves for good old fashioned Holiday memories.
