Trinidad - South Central Colorado
Just 13 miles north of the New Mexico border, Trinidad is seeped in Victorian and Hispanic influences from its native brick streets to the Corazon de Trinidad national Historic District where you will find eclectic architecture with an adobe twist. The small community lies at the confluence of El Rio de las Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio and Raton Creek and has long been a favorite camping site from nomadic Native American tribes and French trappers to today's visitors. In the early years Trinidad was the center of the sheep and cattle industries until coal was discovered in the nearby hills.
The Cokedale National Historic District, eight miles west, is the best example of an intact Colorado coal camp and once housed 1,500 miners. Currently it is home to the area's artist community. Nearby is the Ludlow Monument to the strikers and families who lost their lives during the Colorado coal strike of 1913-14. Explore the flora and fauna to the east along the Santa Fe Trail in the Comanche National Grasslands where the longest dinosaur track-site in the world lies almost untouched by civilization. To the west up the Scenic Highway of the Legends, Monument and North Lakes offer fishing and other outdoor activities with the picturesque background of the Huajatolla. At Trinidad Lake State Park you can hike, boat, waterski, windsurf or fish. Trout, bass, cat, walleye and crappie abound in the area.
