From the nail-biting curves of the Pikes Peak Toll Road Scenic Byway to the spinning antique carousel at the North Pole theme park, the Pikes Peak area is full of breathtaking, exciting experiences for everyone.

Visitors to the area can summit the 14,110-foot Pikes Peak - the inspiration for Katharine Lee Bates' "America the Beautiful" - by riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, braving the Pikes Peak Toll Road Scenic Byway or - for the hearty athlete - hiking the Barr Trail.

Closer to the base of the mountain, vacationers can enjoy excellent hiking and fishing at Rampart Range Reservoir - or follow Highway 24 out of the Colorado Springs area for even more high-altitude fun.

The road, known as Ute Pass because it once served as an important route for the Ute Indians, is home to small towns like Green Mountain Falls and Cascade, which offer lush, tree-filled hikes to surrounding waterfalls. Families love the North Pole, a kid-friendly theme park featuring rides and entertaining shows with Christmas themes.

Farther up the road, Woodland Park and Chipita Park feature scenic hikes through the surrounding Pike National Forest. Woodland Park's Manitou Lake is great for anglers, while the town's Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center is a fun, exhibit-filled museum with hands-on activities for kids and adults alike.

Nearby, Divide is home to Mueller State Park, a 5,000-acre natural area with more than 55 miles of trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. And Lake George, an old stage stop on the way to Leadville, offers even more outdoor activities at Eleven Mile and Spinney Reservoirs, which are ideal for fishing, boating and wildlife watching. Be sure to check out Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, once a raging volcanic field whose lava and ash preserved fossils and petrified wood from millions of years ago.

Whether vacationers are visiting from sea level or have lived at altitude for years, the countless number of activities in the Pikes Peak area is sure to take everybody's breath away.

Commercial air travel accommodations are handled by Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. Please contact your preferred travel agent or airline for flight arrangements.
